Birdwatchers

Classic Film in collaboration with Rai Cinema, Karta Film, Gullane

In Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, the farmers lead a leisurely existence. Yet at the borders of the land, the uneasiness and suicide rates of the natives, who were the legitimate inhabitants of those lands, is rapidaly growing. The two opposing worlds face each other, engaging in a metaphorical, as well as a real, war.

The jury said:

'The jury was unanimous in voting as the winner this engrossing and beautifully made film. Its almost documentary approach drew us into lives we felt we had not seen before on film. Simple though the story is, of indigenous people fighting to regain their land, in its telling it contains many surprises and a delightful lightness of touch and wit. Simple, elegant shots of landscape, often from the air, powerfully counterpoint the story elegantly speaking of the conflict between commercial exploitation of the forest and the native home of the Guarani people.'

"I'm so pleased to have this accolade - there's nothing to match a One World Media Award. And this one recognises that you can still get complex stories about developing world issues to new audiences."
