Last Train Home

China's economy is booming, and one of the reasons is the availability of cheap labour. But with this focus on GDP growth, the country runs the risk of seperating millions of families and leaving their children uneducated. This film examined not only the individual's fate among this chaotic social evolution but also the country's loss and gain in a race to be the world's next super power.

Presumed Guilty

This is the story of two young lawyers and thier incredible struggle to free a young Mexican man wrongfully convicted of murder. With no background in film, they set about recording his story as they realized that only a camera could reveal the institutionalized injustice they were witnessing.

The judges said:

'We were faced with a unique dilemma - two films that excelled in their impact and importance. One which led you into a hidden world, the other that made you burn with anger. Their different approaches were polar opposites and yet they both fully realised the goals of One World Media.
In these circumstances we felt it appropriate to celebrate both films for their extraordinary contribution to documentary filmmaking and to the wider goal of bringing the world closer together.'

The jury panel:

  • Chair: Tom Roberts, Director, October Films
  • Alan Hayling, Editorial Director, Renegade Pictures
  • Natasha Dack, Director, Tigerlily Films

"The wonderful thing about a One World Media Award is the extraordinary company you are in as a winner - on the night, watching the really powerful, important and valuable work other nominees and winners have done is a very humbling experience and makes an award like this feel very special."
