Congo: The Horror

Ed Caesar
GQ Magazine

Ed Caesar investigated the continuing, horrific human rights abuses perpetrated by rival militias on civilians in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The piece examined Britain's arms-length financial involvement in a largely forgotten conflict - in particular our willingness to support the UN force, who in turn support the rapacious Congolese army.

The jury said:

'Ed Caesar's remarkable portrait of the human consequences of an offensive mounted by Congo's army against FDLR rebels offers an outstanding example of superb reportage and vivid descriptive writing. The piece laid bare this disastrous episode, which the media had largely ignored. As such, he achieved the first duty of a foreign correspondent - to disclose by firsthand reporting the suffering inflicted on the innocent by the powerful.'

The jury panel:

  • CHAIR: David Blair, Middle East & African News Editor, Financial Times
  • Christopher Hird, Managing Director, Dartmouth Films
  • Chris Frost, Head of Journalism, Liverpool John Moores
  • Rachel Oldroyd, Senior Journalist, The Bureau of Investigative Journalism
