About Us
Set up in 1987 as the One World Broadcasting Trust, One World Media aims to increase understanding between developing and developed countries through the effective use of media, and to highlight how, in today’s globalised world, all nations are interdependent.
To this end, One World Media seeks to raise awareness of global human rights, social and development issues – from poverty and debt to education, good governance and freedom of expression.
Issues such as climate change, trade and conflict show us that the actions of people living in one part of the world can and do impact on those living in another. But do we - or can we - understand these connections, no matter what country we are living in?
One World Media believes that the media is an immensely powerful tool for promoting this kind of global understanding. It can communicate the realities of how people are living in other parts of the world - their challenges and achievements, their culture and beliefs.
Furthermore, we believe the media can make vital contributions towards universal human rights, democracy and fair government, all over the world.
One World Media works towards greater global understanding through a range of projects:
- Its Awards recognise comprehensive, balanced and innovative media coverage of the developing world
- Its Fund exists to support new media professionals to report on development issues
- Its Fellowships bring together broadcasters from the developing world and the UK
- And its other Activities supplement its established work, through talks, screenings, partnerships and more.
