Introducing the New Director of One World Media

Marion Bowman

Marion Bowman

A warm welcome to our new director Marion Bowman, who will be joining One World Media in September.

Marion moved from television into the voluntary sector in 2005 as Director General of the Landscape Institute, an education and environment charity.

Before that she had a long career in the media, starting out as a newspaper journalist then radio broadcaster. She became one of Channel 4's first current affairs presenters at its launch in 1982, setting up her own independent production company, Scarlet TV, in 1987. In 1992 she joined ITV and set up Metroland, the first-time documentary directors' scheme. She was ITV's Deputy Controller of Factual Programmes before moving to the BBC as Managing Editor in the Entertainment Department. She was Deputy Director of Programmes with the Independent Television Commission until the creation of Ofcom in 2004.

Marion was founder chair of the youth charity Raw Material Media and Music and is currently vice-chair of the UK Tree Council. She has been chair of Sheffield Doc/Fest and a judge for the RTS, BAFTA and International Emmy awards.

‘I'm delighted to be joining the successful team at One World Media who've done so much over the past two decades and more to champion global understanding through the media,' said Marion. ‘International issues are centre-stage, the new coalition government has ring-fenced the aid budget, and more effort is needed to meet the Millennium Development Goals. One World Media is more relevant than ever. The media are a key part of the drive for peace and sustainability, and against poverty. I'm looking forward to collaborating with One World Media's patrons, friends, Fellows, supporters, sponsors and partners both in the UK and around the world to progress this work.'

"At a time of increased instability and divided communities around the world, improving understanding and raising awareness of universal human rights and development has never been more important."
