Behind the scenes as a One World Media Trustee

Executive producer, Monica Garnsey discusses her experiences as a One World Media Trustee.

From judging on our Awards panels and selecting our Fellows, to shaping our fundraising, branding and business strategy, our board of trustees play a crucial role in helping One World Media support strong and independent media coverage from all over the world.

With just a few weeks left for you to apply to join this dedicated team as our new trustee, we sat down with current trustee, Monica Garnsey to find out what it’s like to be on the board of One World Media.

Q: Why did you become a trustee of One World Media?

My career has been in documentaries and current affairs television, often made abroad, as during my time as Series Editor of Unreported World, Channel 4’s long-running foreign affairs series. I’m really committed to bringing UK audiences stories about the rest of the world. Joining One World Media’s board was an opportunity to join an organisation helping filmmakers from the UK and abroad access training and opportunities to tell important and surprising stories that expand our horizons.

Q: What have you most enjoyed being involved in?

Along with great judges from the industry, I really enjoy selecting and helping candidates for the annual One World Media Fellowship. I love going through the entries. The ideas are often completely unexpected. There can be a lot of doom and gloom about the future of foreign reporting, but the standard of entries and the passion of those who apply is massively encouraging.

Q: How has the charity changed since you first joined?

I’ve been on the board for three years. During that time One World Media’s Global Short Docs Forum was launched to help filmmakers – selected from a large number of international entrants – make and sell digital docs. Another satisfying development has been the growth of the One World Media Fellowship. The Fellowship now attracts more than twice as many entries as a few years ago, and the standard is higher and higher.

Q: Do you have any advice for new trustees joining the One World Media board?

If you have time, I would advise getting involved with the projects for emerging filmmakers. It’s heartening to see such talented people who have a real sense of purpose about their work.
