We will be joined by David Lammy, Labour MP for Tottenham, to discuss how Africa is presented in the UK media and how we can move away from the damaging Band Aid narratives of poverty and victimhood, whether by empowering those on the continent to tell their own stories, through the constructive journalism movement or fair filming protocols. The conversation will also be opened up to the floor, giving you the chance to offer your own questions and comments.
David Lammy was elected as Labour MP for Tottenham at the age of 27 in June 2000. He served for 8 years as a Minister in the last Labour government and has led a number of successful campaigns since returning to the backbenches in 2010, including campaigns for diversity to be included in the BBC’s Charter as a Public Purpose and against cuts in apprenticeship funding. In January 2016, the then Prime Minister David Cameron asked David to lead an independent review into the treatment of, and outcomes for, Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic individuals in our criminal justice system. David is an Ambassador for Action Aid and the author of ‘Out of the Ashes: Britain after the riots’, an analysis of the long-standing causes of the 2011 riots and what has to be done to prevent them happening ever again. David is a contributor to publications including The Guardian, The Times, The Independent and The New Statesman among others, and appears regularly on television and radio.
Jon Snow has been the face of Channel 4 News since 1989. He has since travelled the world to cover the news – from the fall of the Berlin Wall and the release of Nelson Mandela, to Barack Obama’s inaugration and earthquake in Haiti. His range of international interviewees ranges from Idi Amin to Bill Gates, and he has won numerous awards, including Journalist of the Year at the Royal Television Society Awards and the Richard Dimbleby BAFTA Award for Best Factual Contribution to Television.
