SESSION 3: Narrative in News – Meet the Gatekeepers

Thursday 9 November | 6pm-7pm

A panel of top news editors will detail their remit for commissioning narrative reports and short documentaries for news. The panel will share valuable insights into what exactly they look for when commissioning short narrative pieces, from the optimum length, to the specific form and content that they aim to produce for their diverse audiences. You will learn how to best pitch your ideas to the major news outlets represented on the panel – as well as inside information on how they work with freelancers.

The Panel:

Federico Escher is an Italian news producer for Channel 4 News in London. He is currently Deputy Foreign Editor and Commissioning Editor for the Foreign Film Fund. He was previously based in Argentina for Associated Press Television where he coordinated operations for the Southern Cone, as well as in his hometown Rome where he started his journalistic career at the Associated Press.

Michael Herrod is Head of Foreign News at ITV News. Michael has worked at ITN for more than 20 years, 18 of which have been at ITV News. He has worked on some of the biggest stories in recent years including the death of Princess Diana in France; the 9/11 attacks in New York and then in Afghanistan; the Iraq war in 2003 and both elections of Barack Obama whilst working in Washington DC.

Toby Sculthorp is an RTS and BAFTA award-winning journalist with over 25 years of experience. He has worked for BBC documentaries, Panorama, Newsnight, Rough Justice and Dispatched before setting up the Sky News long form unit in 2015. He is also editor of The Pledge and Sophie Ridge on Sunday, which launched in January 2017.

Jane Mote (chair) is a journalist, TV professional and former trustee of One World Media, where she worked with the UK media industry to devise and publish the Fair Filming Guidelines. She is the former UK Managing Director of Al Gore’s documentary channel, Current TV, and a Consultant Editor for the Whicker’s World Foundation. Jane combines consultancy work for commercial TV with nurturing new talent and running her own production company, beechtobeach


Doors open at 5.30pm for a 6pm start.
There will be a drinks reception from 7pm.
