The Essential Guide to International Reporting

From crafting and pitching your story to preparing for international productions, this intensive 3-week course will give you all the skills necessary to engage global audiences with your reporting.

Three interactive workshops will each focus on an essential skill for international reporters: the fundamentals of storytelling, the practicalities of reporting and the secrets to successful pitching.

Workshops are run by our award-winning producers, providing a unique opportunity to learn firsthand from experienced professionals, ask questions and participate in group discussions.

For journalists and filmmakers working across any medium, this course will help you to develop your idea for any pitch or application, including the One World Media Fellowship.

Storytelling Fundamentals with Julie Noon

Acclaimed investigative journalist and documentary filmmaker, Julie Noon will guide you through this interactive workshop, teaching you the fundamentals of excellent storytelling, interview techniques and how to engage audiences. Topics include:

Planning & Practicalities with Julie Noon

This second session will provide crucial insight into everything you need to know before you start reporting. Julie has produced and directed award-winning pieces all over the world, and will share her invaluable experience on preparing to report on international stories. Topics include:

  • Working in the field
  • How to save an unravelling story
  • Physical, digital & psychological risk
  • Safety tips for freelancers

Pitching Masterclass with Dominique Young

Executive Producer Dominique Young will present a masterclass on what makes a strong pitch. From developing an idea to writing a synopsis, learn how to write a proposal and gain invaluable insights into how commissioners work. Topics include:

  • Communicating your idea
  • What makes a good proposal
  • Writing an effective treatment, synopsis & logline
  • Working with commissioners, platforms & funders
  • Tips for getting your story noticed
